Pick: Son Volt

While Jay Farrar is known mostly for his hand in guiding alternative country pioneers Uncle Tupelo, the long-running Son Volt may just be his signature project now. Son Volt's first three albums, released between 1995 and 1998, served as important guideposts for just what laid beyond the work of Uncle Tupelo, which forged together college rock, roots music, punk rock and country rock of Gram Parsons. Since reviving the Son Volt name in 2005, Farrar has continued to explore the same nexus of sound where roots music meets a host of its antecedents.
