Pick: North Mississippi Allstars

February 20
North Mississippi Allstars w/ the London Souls
The Waiting Room Lounge, 6212 Maple St.
8 p.m., $18 in advance/$20 day-of-show, onepercentproductions.com

The North Mississippi Allstars have roots music in their blood, but the Mississippi blues-rock act certainly isn't tied to tradition. Brothers Cody and Luther Dickinson, son of legendary producer and musician Jim Dickinson, compose the heart of the band, which jams on elements of Southern rock, Americana and broke-ass blues. While defying genre expectations with their raw, electric sound, this band of able musicians has earned Grammy awards, backed up John Hiatt on tour and opened tour dates from Robert Plant. The Allstars are a rare act that can appeal to both blues purists and rock fans looking for something grittier and bluesier than the latest Black Keys record.
