Intricately off-kilter Chicago band Maps & Atlases have built a steady following of indie rock fans, thanks to their indie-pop take on math rock. The band incorporates straightforward elements of folk-pop, which they then dismantle and distort into odder, more challenging shapes. Whirring synths and processed guitar parts create new angles of textures, even as vocal harmonies seek to calm the band's sonic waters. The band's 2010 debut album, Perch Patchwork built fans steadily between its release and the release of its 2012 follow-up, Beware and Be Grateful. Now the band stands among a group of art-pop bands with technical progressive music tendencies, such as Menomena, Minus the Bear and Foals.
