Pick: Jukebox the Ghost

April 19
Jukebox The Ghost w/ Pretty & Nice
The Waiting Room Lounge, 6212 Maple St.
9 p.m., $10 in advance/$12 day-of-show, onepercentproductions.com

Jukebox the Ghost is a shapeshifting band of modern indie-poppers, willing to graft rubbery 80s R&B uplift or polyrhythmic world-music styling to their propulsive pop songs. The Brooklyn-based trio's shifting sound has allowed them to share the stage with Ben Folds Five, Jack's Mannequin, Adam Green and the Barenaked Ladies. It's the slight sheen of mass appeal mixed with a streak of unsettled weirdness that's helped them find a growing crowd in the indie-rock scene. Their third album, 2012's Safe Travels, brought a welcome dose of introspective lyrics to the band's sound, while the music still stayed upbeat and lively. It's a sign that Jukebox the Ghost is finding a way to make its sprightly piano-led pop moments connect with more and more people, suggesting that a breakthrough like what happened to Young the Giant, a similarly-minded contemporary, isn't far off.
