Pick: Jake’s Block Party

September 6
Jake's Block Party
Jake's Cigars & Spirits, 6206 Maple St.
7 p.m., $5, hearnebraska.org

For all of those who decree that summer is over after Labor Day, Jake's Cigars & Spirits annual block party is back to say, "C'mon, let's give this thing at least one more week." So come enjoy an outdoor beer garden and a line-up of excellent local bands during the September edition of Benson First Friday.  Jake's have teamed up with local music scene website HearNebraska.org to curate a night featuring some of Omaha's and one of Lincoln's best musical acts. It's Lincoln's Universe Contest that will cap off the evening, with their increasingly theatric show of anthemic, but twitchy indie rock. Noah's Ark Was A Spaceship will bring a cyclone of grimy, Sonic Youth-inspired guitar rock. See Through Dresses hits on a strain of 90s indie rock that existed on labels like K Records and Kill Rock Stars, while Twinsmith filters in doses of shimmering sunshine to its laidback guitar pop.  Meanwhile, Oquoa is just playing its first few shows, featuring a collaboration between ex-Conduits guitarist JJ Idt and former folkie Max Holmquist (Great American Desert).
