“Fresh Gunk” introduces viewers with Colin Smith’s recently produced brightly colored graphic paintings and sculptures on display thru September at Modern Arts Midtown. His challenging, spatial works are known for their combination of minimalism and expressionism with liveliness and spirit rare in contemporary painting. From afar, the work might seem simple forms and blocks of color, but closer inspection reveals intense mark making. The Nebraska-based artist received his BFA in 1988 from the University of Nebraska-Omaha and MFA in 1992 from Drake University.
