Pick: Free Energy

June 19
Free Energy w/ Touch People

It's time to meet Free Energy, the cheesiest power-pop rockers that are actually ten times cooler than any of us will ever be. LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy produced their first album, the sugary sweet Stuck on Nothing and their latest album, Love Sign, ups the big-hooks rock guitar quotient significantly. This Philadelphia band plays a brand of power pop that pairs synth lines that remind heavily of the Cars with clean, bright 80s rock guitar lines. There's handclaps, there's whoo-ohs and there's plenty uses of the word "love" in these songs. The band isn't beyond urging listeners to turn it up either. This is the sort of band that would have opened for Thin Lizzy, had they existed in the 70s and the sort of band that has proudly picked up the sound of bands like Sloan and Fountains of Wayne and ran wild with it.
