Pick: Avett Brothers

July 3rd
The Avett Brothers
Harrah's Casino Stir Cove, 1 Harrah's Blvd. in Council Bluffs
8 p.m., $35 plus fees, ticketmaster.com

The Avett Brothers hail from North Carolina, where they evolved at a time where a new folk-rock revolution seemed to be taking hold. Now Seth and Scott Avett and their bandmates have become standard-bearers of a sound that has launched acts like the Civil Wars, Mumford & Sons and Fleet Foxes to commercial success. Success has come to the Avett Brothers too, as their 2007 release Emotionalism caught the ear of American Recordings' head honcho Rick Rubin, who subsequently signed the band and produced their 2009 high water mark, I and Love and You. Now the band combines folk elements with Buddy Holly rock moves and harmony-rich acoustic pop anthems. Expect another Rubin-produced album later this year.
