The North Carolina-based Avett Brothers now have a head full of steam, after several years of building a rabid, grassroots following on the back of relentless touring and soulfully delivered folk-rock. After a self-released album and a four-album partnership with local imprint Ramseur Records, the band found itself under the tutelage of American Recordings' impresario Rick Rubin. The resulting collaboration, 2009's I and Love and You, brought a further refinement to the band's sweet, rollicking mix of '60s folk rock, bluegrass, indie pop and roots punk. The album took off just as like-minded contemporaries like Fleet Foxes and Mumford & Sons found similar success. What sets the Avett Brothers apart is the low-key, deeply-felt vibe that all of their songs are infused with. The band has finished yet another Rubin-helmed album, which is due out this year.
