Bart Vargas’ painting, “FUCK” went missing at Star Deli Gallery Oct. 3, two days before the opening of his exhibit “WORDS.” The painting of the explicit word is among the show of various words (“FEMINIST,” “LOVE,” “NICE,” among others), many, as “FUCK,” painted as gifts for friends of the artist. In the empty spot lies a photo of the painting with a note: “This painting was stolen from the artist, the artist’s friend it was promised to, and you, the audience. If you have any information regarding this painting’s whereabouts please contact The Benson Star Deli or Bart Vargas. Thank you.” “WORDS” is up thru Oct. 31 at the Gallery in Benson. Bartvargas.com.
Peerless Gallery closed the doors of their Midtown location Oct. 1. The gallery curators transitioned into working with artist Ying Zhu in her private Benson Studio. Peerless will remain their moniker for future collaborative projects and pop-up exhibitions. Wearepeerless.com.
A big weekend for Joslyn Art Museum as they present “The Art of Dance: Momentum & Under Pressure,” Oct. 19 & 21, an original ballet by Ballet Nebraska inspired by the Joslyn exhibition “Under Pressure.” Joslyn recently opened “Under Pressure: Contemporary Prints from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation” with selections from the largest collection of contemporary prints in the US. “A Journey Without End: Ed Young” opened Oct. 13 featuring illustrations by the award-winning artist inspired by Chinese painting. Included in the (downtown) omaha lit fest this weekend, an Altered Book Exhibit presented by the Nebraska Women’s Caucus for Art inspired by “Women in Literature.” The show runs Oct. 20-21 along with the festival at the W.Dale Clark Library. Omahalitfest.com.
