Meet Dumb Beach
* Peace of Shit, the Omaha garage rock project of Austin Ulmer, is changing its name to something less profane and less offensive, apparently. The new name is Dumb Beach and the name is as good as it sounds when you say it out loud. Ulmer has stayed busy since starting the band, releasing music primarly on limited edition cassettes on local label, Rainy Road Records. The band's 2012 cassette, Business As Usual, can be streamed on Youtube for digital listening pleasure at youtube.com/watch?v=Jz2Ml1isjY8.
* Al Hatfield of the Big Al Band has announced the dates for his sixth annual Free Music Festival. The multi-night event kicks off Tuesday, April 23rd and runs through Saturday, April 27th. All events take place at the Hideout Lounge, 320 South 72nd St, with the Big Al Band headlining Friday and Saturday's shows. There is no cover for any of the shows. Each night will also feature a local music swap meet, where local artists are invited to trade music and merch with other local musicians. Performers this year are set to include Civicminded, Pflames, Bloodcow, Faded, The Minnahoonies, Super Destroyer, All Young Girls Are Machine Guns, Witness Tree, John Klemmensen & the Party and Ellmatiq P-tro. * Austin, Tex. psych rock kings the Black Angels are finally returning to Omaha. The band last played at a newly-opened Waiting Room Lounge, 6212 Maple St. They will return to the Waiting Room Sunday, April 21st. Consider this a strong show-of-the-year candidate.
* Another great April show should be on tap, thanks to Slow Burn Productions. New York indie-punk act The Men will play the Slowdown, 729 North 14th St. Saturday, April 27th. The Sacred Bones-signed band shifts between anthemic indie anthems and walls of Sonic Youth-inspired guitar riffage.
* The second installment of the Kanrocksas Music Festival, held Friday, June 28th and Saturday, June 29th at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan. have announced the first three acts set to play the two day music festival. Emerging hip-hop star Kendrick Lamar, chart-topping veteran DJ Tiesto and Americana favorites Avett Brothers are all on tap for the summer festival, which started in 2010.
