June 7, Les Femmes Folles (Full Disclosure: I am producer of this event) and momaha.com present: The Act of Creation: A Mom-Artist Panel/Exhibit/Performance with artists Julian Adair (dance/photography), Megan Hunt (fashion design), Sarah McKinstry-Brown (poet), Rachel Mindrup (visual art), Jamie Pressnall (music), Kim Reid Kuhn (visual art), Ellen Struve (theatre) and Michelle Troxclair (spoken word), hosted by momaha.com editor Josie Loza. The event is free with in-kind donations encouraged for Lydia House.
Thursday night too, Bemis art-talk with artists Angela Fraleigh (painting), Wesley Heiss (installation) and James Austin Murray (painting) at 7pm. Bemis Center also just announced their new artists-in-residence for the first half of 2013. Out of 723 applicants, 18 were selected including painter Anna Kristensen of Sydney, Australia, video artist/sculptor Allison O’Daniel of Los Angeles and installation artist Mauro Giaconi of Mexico City. June 8, Modern Arts Midtown opens Left and Right of Center, two solo shows featuring Tom Rierden’s pop-art oil paintings and Sunny Gibbon’s dramatic waterscape oil paintings. Friday night also, Stephen Dinsmore—Play Ball opens at Anderson O’Brien Fine Art Old Market, features paintings of portraits of the game of baseball. Lisa Tubach’s Interference exhibit of large-scale drawings and painting examining the environment will also be on display. At the Fred Simon Gallery, Paul Konchagulian opens an exhibit Friday featuring ghis steel sculpture exploring the “more malleable side of steel’s properties.” Tugboat Presents in Midtown, This Is the Place opens featuring documentary photography by Hudson Gardner, Kevin Hayes, Daniel Muller and Rob Walters. Susan Knight: Glimpses opens Friday at RNG Gallery featuring a “special dance” choreographed by Josie Metal-Corbin. Knight’s sculpture acrylic work and hand-cut paper explores water and the environment. She’ll give an art talk June 9 at noon at the gallery.
This week, Joslyn Art Museum’s newly hired Curator of Contempory Art, Karin Campbell, begins her post at the Museum, fresh from independent curatorial work with Fundacio Joan Miro in Barcelona and curating for Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.
