Bill Arning, Director of the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, will join Karin Campbell, Joslyn’s Phil Willson Curator of Contemporary Art, and Hesse McGraw, Chief Curator at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, to talk about the various contexts in which each of them has worked and the opportunities and challenges they have encountered in the course of their careers. BILL ARNING, formerly the curator at MIT’s List Center, has published in many contemporary art periodicals, including Modern Painters, Art in America, Trans, Out, and Parkett. Known as a “cowboy curator of cutting-edge, contemporary art”, he was the Director and chief curator of White Columns Alternative Art Space in New York from 1985-1996. KARIN CAMPBELL came to Joslyn in June after a four-year stint at Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh, PA) where she planned many aspects of the 55th Carnegie International. For the 2011–12 installment of the annual Espai 13 at Fundació Joan Miró (Barcelona, Spain), Campbell curated The End is Where We Start From, featuring commissions by young, female artists. Under HESSE McGRAW’s leadership, the Bemis’ exhibition program focuses on site-specific, immersive, cross-disciplinary and socially-engaged commissions. McGraw has been recognized with an Andy Warhol Foundation Curatorial Research Fellowship, a Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Artistic Innovation and Collaboration Grant, an NEA Our Town grant, and a Harpo Foundation Grant. The group will take questions from the audience.
