July Local Food News

Dutch Girl Creamery located just outside of Lincoln, Ne., launched a kick-starter campaign to help raise funds to build a cheese making plant at their farm. The goat dairy and cheese making business is an offshoot of the Shadow Brook Farm brand, owned by Charuth Van Beuzekom and Kevin Loth. At press time Dutch Girl Creamery still needed $15,000 to meet its $25,000 fundraising goal. To support the cause and get some of the region’s best cheese for your generosity visit: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1985279006/shadow-brook-farms-dutch-girl-creamery

For those interested in a mini-road trip for local food check out the Bike-in-Bite event in Sioux City, Iowa. For a mere $10 you can pedal your bike to the Sioux City Farmers Market on Aug. 4, pick up a map of participating restaurants, bike to them and bite into appetizers featuring locally grown ingredients. To learn more or for tickets call the Woodbury County Extension 712.276.2157

Should you decide the folks are friendly in and around Sioux City, make a return visit for the Farm-to-Fork Culinary Tour on Aug. 19. The drive yourself event provides farm food tastings created by area chefs at various locations. To find out more visit www.flavorsofnorthwestiowa.org
