Joslyn Under Pressure Print Exhibit

UNDER PRESSURE Contemporary Prints from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation is on view at the Joslyn Art Museum through January 6, 2013. Schnitzer, president of Harsch Investment Properties, owns the largest private print collection of contemporary printmaking in the United States. This exhibition is an opportunity to see some exceptional examples of American prints from the past half century. Karin Campbell, Joslyn's newly-appointed Phil Willson Curator of Contemporary Art has said, “Something that I would like people to get out of this exhibition is that you can approach all art work from your own point of entry. I think that the work in the show is a really good example of that. Perhaps one of the most interesting ideas to me is this idea of surface texture. It’s a very basic thing you get from printmaking, how a work was made. You see how an artist has been layering inks, how they have manipulated the surface of a piece of paper, and I think that provides a really nice point of connection.” The issue of surface texture is readily apparent in a diverse group of prints, such as those by Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Vija Celmins, Ellen Gallagher, and Judy Pfaff. The exhibit features the work of thirty-nine artists and addresses a wide variety of artistic and social concerns. The gallery guide for the exhibition is particularly helpful in providing a context and background. It is available in the galleries, or may be accessed on-line at the museum’s web site. The exhibit will travel to three additional venues and be on tour through May, 2014. http://www.joslyn.org/
