Nebraska AIDS Project hosts 3rd Annual Project Condom Fashion Show
The Nebraska AIDS Project is promoting safe sex in a fun and creative way this week with their 3rd Annual Project Condom Fashion Show. The show will be held at the Doubletree Hotel downtown, Wednesday, June 15. Designers from the Omaha area show off their own taste in fashion that includes condoms in their designs. The show's concept is to promote the idea of safe sex by showing clothing that is fresh, fashionable and made with condoms or their wrappers. The fashion show was an idea created by producer Gary Winingham as a way to reach people in a positive way. Audience members will get a chance to enjoy a night of creative fashion while learning the importance of safe sex. The Nebraska AIDS Project wanted a new way to introduce the subject to a wide range of people, including 12 designers clothing lines the first year. Designers in the show are asked to participate either by recommendation or were featured in last yearÅfs Omaha Fashion Week. Whether it is the cause or the fashion, the fundraiser has been a success from the beginning. Nakiea Boetger, the co-producer of the fashion show says that it creates a great opportunity to spark conversations about safe sex in a more comfortable setting. Since the show's beginning three years ago, attendance has continued to exceed her expectations. She hopes that with the success of last year's show, those attending will tell their friends to join in the fun while showing off their own fashion favorites. "I would really like to see people in the audience wear their favorite designers and get creative, either with a necklace featuring a condom or something to join in the fun," Boetger said. The clothing line created by each of the designers does feature condoms but is made family friendly for parents wanting to bring their teenagers to the show. The family friendly atmosphere was made in an effort to allow families to ease into the subject of safe sex. "It can be a very awkward subject for people. We hope that this can help some people open up about it," Boetger said. While the subject can be an awkward one for most parents, this fashion show is just an added effort in easing their kinds into the conversation. "It is an all ages event. We encourage all of our designers to be mindful of that," Boetger said. "We hope that the show will continue to be successful in order to spread the word about safe sex." The night's entertainment will not only feature fresh designs but food provided by CRAVE. CRAVE is the official restaurant sponsor of the Project Condom Fashion Show and will offer food from 4 p.m. to midnight on the day of the show. The Project Condom Fashion Show will take place Wednesday, June 15, at the Downtown Doubletree (1616 Dodge St). Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online for $10.
