FASH FLOOD

Omaha’s biggest fashion event is right around the corner, are you excited? Around this time every year I get a few emails from friends or acquaintances asking questions about what to expect at Omaha Fashion Week. This year, I’m answering the most commonly asked questions so even first timers will have a little insight on what to expect.

What should I wear?

This is undoubtedly the question I receive most often. Everyone expresses a desire to fit in with the overall “look” of the night –so here’s my opinion. For weeknight shows feel free to dress up, but it’s ok to be a little more casual. A dress is fine, but so are jeans and heels. It’s really more about expressing your personal style, so go ahead and wear something bold.

For Saturday’s runway finale show, you’ll be expected to dress up a little bit more, but generally there’s still a full range of formality from cocktail gowns to jean shorts. I would recommend dressing like you do for a night out or to a wedding reception, without being conservative. Also, be conscious that you may have to park and walk a long distance, so it might not be the best time to break in your six-inch platforms. If you can, grab a pair of foldable travel flats to throw in your bag for emergencies.

Do I need to bring anything?

Other than your beautiful self, be sure to bring cash so you can make easy stops at the bar and food vendors (especially for Saturday’s show). If you’re interested in networking at Omaha Fashion Week, don’t forget your business cards.

I’m not familiar with many local designers; which nights are best to attend?

This is a tough question to answer. Saturday is always my favorite night, because I love the outdoor runway and the large crowd it draws (hello, people watching). As for weeknight shows, I would just check out the show schedule to see which nights best align with your style interests. I’m personally most interested in day and evening wear, but you might be more into swimwear or avant-garde collections, so give the schedule a little peek before purchasing tickets.

Omaha Fashion Week is August 20-25th, 2012. For more information and show schedule, visit omahafashionweek.com.
