Doomtree, the Minneapolis indie hip-hop super group, has been on a long and grueling road, but the 7 hard-working artists have finally started to get the recognition they deserve since emerging in 2001. While it’s most certainly a “boys club,” there is one brave woman who’s holding it down. Dessa (born Margret Wander) comes armed with years of spoken word experience, a B.A. in philosophy, 4 solo studio albums and a new book called Spiral Bound (Doomtree Press). Her most recent album, 2011’s Castor, The Twin, further explores her penchant for the written word with fluent, poetic lyrics and unbridled, raw emotion. About to embark on another solo tour, she is well-prepared thanks to the massive worldwide tour she just finished with Doomtree. “I think working in Doomtree is like an overlapping of tastes and styles. It’s kind of like cross training for solo shows. I’m forced to step outside comfort zone,” Wander says. “I hear sounds and beats and patterns that wouldn’t have occurred to me before. Solo shows and the solo recorded material is an opportunity to investigate my lyrical fascinations.”
