Desaparecidos, Garbage to litter Maha’s stage
* A reunited Desaparecidos and '90s alternative rock act Garbage will serve as headliners to the 2012 edition of the Maha Music Festival on Saturday, August 11th at Aksarben Village's Stinston Park. Desaparecidos is the political punk-minded side project of Conor Oberst that released their lone full-length back in 2002. The all-day show will also feature appearances by local band Icky Blossoms, who are set to release their debut album on Saddle Creek Records later this year. Nebraska-born Josh Rouse is also on the bill, playing a special solo acoustic set. Rouse, who now resides in Spain, has cemented a sterling reputation as a singer-songwriter. The festival has yet to announce the rest of its main stage bands or any of the local stage performers beyond Icky Blossoms.
* Downtown coffee house 13st Street Coffee will once again be hosting live musical performances, starting May 19th with a performance by Ashley Raines. The shop, 519 South 13th St., plans to host other performances, primarily on Saturdays. All the shows are free. For more information on the shows, visit 13thStreetCoffeeandTea.com.
* Make Believe Records is a label ran by Keith Rodger and Rick Carson. Carson also runs the Make Believe studio space, which is located at 805 Hickory St. An April 9th Backbeat item incorrectly stated Rodger's position at the label.
* Helix Troy will release his new album, Cloud 9, at a CD release party Friday, May 11th at the Hideout, 320 South 72nd St. The CD was produced by Op2mus, who is set to perform at the release show, which is also a release party for a new line of Troy's "Pinky's Up" t-shirts, as well as a birthday party for Troy. Performers include Rott Doggz, Dirty Diamonds and That LEEG. Troy is signed to the Chicago-based label, Muzical Menace Records.
* Keep your eye out for the latest Whipkey Three CD Two Truths. It's another excellent release by local roots rock hero Matt Whipkey and cohorts. The trio of Whipkey, drummer Scott Zimmerman and bassist Travis Sing keep the pace rocking on the disc's eight cuts of roughed-up, streamlined songs. J. Soctt Gaeta and Ben Zinn sit in to lend added touches of keys, slide guitar and pedal steel, adding dimension to songs that beg to blasted while drinking beers at a midtown bar. The Whipkey Three will celebrate the release Saturday, May 12th inside the Stir Live & Loud bar at Harrah's Casino in Council Bluffs.
* Conduits latest music video comes in the one-take live performance variety, courtesy of local videographers, Love Drunk Studio. Love Drunk shot the video for the song "The Wonder" in a nearly pitch black room at the Slowdown, 729 North 14th St., this past March.
