Cutting Room for September 28

  • In what is fast becoming an annual fall tradition less likely to give you diabetes than trick or treating, Film Streams (filmstreams.org) is once more bringing The Alloy Orchestra to perform a live score to the 1925 horror classic The Phantom of the Opera on Friday, Oct 12 at 7 pm. There is nothing more atmospheric than having live music played during a silent horror film, other than actually having a maniacal murderer in the audience. Speaking of the opposite of murder and horror, Film Streams has also announced the lineup for their latest “Forever Young” series of family and children’s movies. This time out, you can peep The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad, Tales of the Night, Top Hot, Follow the Fleet, Swing Time, Shall We Dance, Fiddler on the Roof and It’s a Wonderful Life. As a lifelong enthusiast of both Mr. Toad’s wild ride and playing instruments on top of buildings while dancing, I fully endorse this lineup.
  • Aksarben Cinema (aksarbencinema.com) has a bone to pick with Kermit, in that they seem to have no trouble being green. From 5-9 pm on Thursday, Oct 11, the theater will be hosting the Reel to Reel Sustainability Film Festival, an environmentally aware fundraiser with the Green Omaha Coalition. With short films, panel discussions and, perhaps most importantly, plenty of food, the event is designed to help Omaha Hulk out…in that it becomes powerfully green. Then, on Oct 17 at 7 pm, the theater is screening Patriocracy, a documentary about political polarization that will be followed by a discussion with reps from both side of the aisle. My friends say I should see this, but I was too busy posting an angry political Facebook status to listen.
