Cutting Room for October 5

  • If you feel something churning in your stomach, it may not be nausea but nostalgia, as for the 31st time Bruce Crawford is celebrating classic cinema. American Graffiti, a film George Lucas made back when he cared about making good films, will ring in its 40th anniversary at the Joslyn Art Museum’s Witherspoon Hall at 7 pm on Friday Nov 2. Tickets are 20 bucks and are available at all Hy-Vee customer service counters, with proceeds benefitting the Nebraska Kidney Association. Hate charitable giving to a good cause and watching great movies but love celebrities? You’re in luck! Cindy Williams (“Laverne and Shirley”) and Eddie Mekka (also from “Laverne and Shirley”) will be there to watch you watch them. For more info, head to omahafilmevent.com. It’s the only treatment for recurrent bouts of nostalgia.
  • If one is good and two is better, three is better than better! And “better than better” may as well be Film Streams motto, as they are bringing a trio of awesome filmmakers to Omaha for Q&As throughout the next few months. On Thursday, Oct 25 at 7 pm, writer/actor Carlen Altman will appear at a special screening of The Color Wheel, which is a movie shot in black and white (feel free to ask about that). Then, on Thursday Nov 8 at 7 pm, design alliance OMAha is collaborating with Film Streams to welcome filmmaker Bill Jersey and his documentary Eames: The Painter and the Architect; Jersey is also speaking to area high-school students the following day, which is a nice thing to do and takes a lot of patience (if you remember what high-school students are like). Finally, on Thursday Dec 13 at 7 pm, director Neil Berkeley will be there for a screening of his film Beauty Is Embarrassing (tell me about it). It follows artist Wayne White, who worked on “Pee-wee’s Playhouse.” Tickets for all three events are on sale now, so get to getting them!
