Cutting Room for March 22

  • It’s like Film Streams (filmstreams.org) has been going through my mail. How else do you explain why they’re teaming up with Family Housing Advisory Services (fhasinc.org) to present a free screening of Maxed Out, a documentary about American credit card debt. Followed by a panel discussion, the screening will be held April 16 at 7 pm, and will hopefully focus on telling me why I shouldn’t charge my comic book store purchases. In all seriousness, American attitudes toward debt are a major cause for concern; the only debt we should be unable to escape is to our mothers for birthing us.
  • Director Lynne Ramsay, who absolutely murdered We Need to Talk About Kevin (pun intended), didn’t show up for work. That is, if you believe producers who claim that the auteur simply didn’t show up for the first day of shooting for Jane Got a Gun, which stars Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton. It also used to star Jude Law, but he split when Ramsay split, or so the story goes. We may never know the real story of the drama behind this indie drama, but I hope Ramsay finds another project she believes in enough to come to work for soon.
  • Director of the GI Joe sequel and upcoming Masters of the Universe film, Jon M. Chu has publicly stated his desire to have Dolph Lundgren, who starred in the first ill-fated He-Man adaptation years and years ago, appear in a cameo role. What Chu doesn’t know, is that if he says Lundgren’s name again two times in the dark, his home will be possessed by the Aryan former pseudo-celebrity.
