Cutting Room for March 15

  • It’s rare to be excited about both sides of an ampersand, but Aksarben Cinema and Together are teaming up for a Documentary & Wine Tasting Event on Thursday April 4 from 5:30-7 pm. For $25 a ticket ($40 for a couple, and nobody will check if it’s a “Greencard” situation), you get to watch Food Stamped, a short documentary about trying to eat healthy on food stamps. Oh, and you’ll also get wine. Good wine. To taste. In your mouth. To purchase tickets, head here. All proceeds will go to Together’s “First Stop Program,” which is designed to assist with emergency resources for people in extreme poverty. So you get to drink and watch a movie while helping those in need. If all charity work were this easy, I’d turn myself into a nonprofit organization.
  • And speaking of nonprofit organizations, the coolest NPO I know, Film Streams, will stop, collaborate, and listen to the Nebraska Science Festival. Together, they will bring a special screening of Birth Story: Ina May Gakin and the Farm Midwives, which has to do with hippies delivering farm babies. It’s basically Woodstock meets “Where Do Babies Come From?” There will also be a discussion featuring panelists from the Olson Center for Women’s Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Presumably, they will be able to discuss issues beyond why a stork was chosen as the allegorical baby bearer among all other possible animal choices.
  • I can’t tell a lie, this next bit of news isn’t all that important or exciting, but I have to share it with you. Among all the actors set to return to the series in order to make cameos or fully star in X-Men: Days of Future Past, it is two new additions I am most tickled by. I just read a press release that informed me Fan Bingbing and Booboo Stewart have been added to the cast. Bingbing and Booboo would be the best cop show ever.
