Cutting Room for March 1

  • Although the documentary Girl Rising sadly does not detail the first woman born with the superpower of flight, the film does have a pretty neat trick: it’s free to see! At least if you head down to Film Streams (filmstreams.org) on Thursday, April 4 at 7 pm. The free screening, funded in part by TD Ameritrade, will be held in collaboration with the Institute for Career Advancement Needs (icanglobal.net) and will feature a post-show Q&A with Azure Antoinette, an artist and global ambassador. The movie tells the stories of nine girls from different developing nations, only their stories are transformed for the screen by a writer from each respective country. Oh, and each segment is narrated by incredibly good-looking people like Kerry Washington, Meryl Streep, Salma Hayek, Anne Hathaway, Selena Gomez and Cate Blanchett. Howsabout that? Incredibly talented beautiful people using only their voices and not their appearance in a film? Maybe next year at the Oscars, Seth McFarlane will have to sing “We Heard Your Voice.”
  • Speaking of those Oscars, just a quick wrap-up of my thoughts, for those of you who didn’t follow my barrage of live tweets on twitter @thereaderfilm. Seth was a sexist mess, Quentin Tarantino was dressed for a black-tie serial killer formal, Ang Lee won for directing computer graphics, Christoph Waltz is still the supporting boss and Ben Affleck got screwed for his solo prize but took home a well-deserved Best Picture win. The fact that Beasts of the Southern Wild took home nothing is the reason I used up my year’s allotment of naughty words.
  • Kokowääh, a popular German comedy from a few years back, is going to be remade…by Bradley Cooper…who may direct it. I don’t know about you, but whenever I see Bradley Cooper, I think, “I wish he would direct himself in an English-language adaptation of a German comedy written by the guy who played Hugo Stiglitz in Inglourious Basterds.” Wish fulfilled!
