Cutting Room for June 7

  • Yo, lissen up: On Thursday July 11 at 7 pm, Shakespea-zy is in da heezy! Film Streams is goin’ hard for The Bard, pairing a screening of Joss Whedon’s upcoming adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing with a post-show discussion, featuring the University of Nebraska at Omaha professor D. Scott Glasser and Nebraska Shakespeare’s artistic director, Vincent Carlson-Brown. That way, you can ask questions like “what’s an ado and does it hurt?”
  • As much as I love Askarben Cinema, I don’t sew for anyone. Thankfully, The Quilted Conscience is just a documentary about 16 Sudanese girls who wound up in Grand Island, Neb. and not a club where I’m expected to make a blanket while crying. At 7 pm on June 20, Aksarben Cinema is holding a free screening, but you should already be there well before that because starting at 5:30, you can see exhibits about the Omaha Refugee Task Force, displays of quilts and culturally related foods. After the film, Susan Mayberger of the Omaha Public Schools will facilitate a panel discussion, which is not a discussion about quilt panels (though I suppose it technically could be). This is an amazing story taking place right here in Nebraska, so if you miss it, you’ll be left out in the cold. Get it? Because quilts keep you warm…
  • I wish I was kidding when I said I’ve been waiting for a big-screen movie about Grigori Rasputin my entire life, but he is literally the one historical figure I’ve found most intriguing. Let’s focus just on his death. He was poisoned with tons of cyanide and lived. Then he was shot but ran away. Then he was shot two more times and fought back. Then he was beaten with a club, tied in a blanket and shoved in a river. When they found his body, he had gotten free of his bindings. The official cause of death? Hypothermia. And because he died in water, Leonardo DiCaprio is legally required to play him in the movie and has now signed on to do just that.
