Cutting Room for June 1

  • Film Streams (filmstreams.org) is going a long way for a play on words here, but they’ve earned it. Leading up to their fifth anniversary on July 27, a momentous occasion that makes me feel older than my desire to eat dinner at 4:30, the theater is celebrating for the next nine weeks, culminating with Jane Fonda coming to town for a fundraiser on July 22. They’re calling it “Nine to Five.” If you don’t get that reference, you need to get slapped with Dolly Parton’s bazooms. The celebration is going to include a look back at milestones for the theater and a healthy dose of appreciation for those who made it all happen. But you know, for bringing high-brow art cinema to our humble Big O, I kinda feel like we should be the ones thanking them.
  • Have no fear, Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are reportedly close to signing on to reprise their roles in Kick-Ass 2. As interesting as that is, I am more curious if they are going to be faithful to the source material when it comes to names. While Mitz-Plasse (he who shall forever be known as McLovin’) played Red Mist in the first film, the comic sequel changes his name to…well, let’s just say it rhymes with Brother Trucker. If you thought the first film pushed boundaries, I promise you are not ready for what Brother Trucker does this time around.
  • George Lucas has announced that he is moving away from Lucasfilm to focus on experimental, smaller films. While this may sound like a reason to fire up the Ewok drums and rain down some Gungan confetti, the bearded-neckless-one is not relinquishing oversight of the Star Wars universe so much as leaving day-to-day operations to Kathleen Kennedy, who can be counted on to ensure Lucas’ legacy of ruining something we all once loved continues onward.
