Cutting Room for July 27

  • Charlie Kaufman’s only directorial effort, the genius work of art that is Synecdoche, New York, broke my brain in half. Thus, announcement of his forthcoming sophomore effort fills me with equal parts glee and a desire to purchase of copious amounts of aspirin. It comes with the inauspicious title Frank or Francis and the simplistic plotline, “a volatile back and forth between a film director (Frank) and an online blogger (Francis).” But don’t let that fool you, the cast is sheer lunacy: Nicholas Cage, Jack Black and Steve Carell. I look forward to calling it the best film of 2013 and then spending 2014 trying to figure it out.

  • National Lampoon’s Vacation, long a cultural touchstone to victims of fathers resembling Clark Griswold, is getting remade. The only good news about the latest boxcar added to the remake train is that it is being written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who wrote Horrible Bosses, a comedy that’s actually as funny as it is supposed to be. You know what, I’m predicting some casting news now: Jason Sudeikis is about to chase Chevy off of that Griswold throne.

  • It’s not technically movie news, but have you seen the new Spike Jonze-directed Beastie Boys video for “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” yet? It’s funk-tastic. It features stop-motion animated action figures doing things only Spike Jonze would make action figures do. Also really awesome: Jonze’s entire recent stream of short films over the last few years, including We Were Once a Fairytale, I’m Here and, his most recent project with Arcade Fire, Scenes from the Suburbs. We tend to give short films the short end of the sharp stick, but the long and the short of it is that Jonze rocks at any length.
