Cutting Room for February 22

  • The Omaha Film Festival (omahafilmfestival.org) may not start until March 7, but the party starts much sooner! The annual “OFF’scar Party,” which is held on Feb 26 at the Mastercraft Building (1111 N 13th St, suite 130), features a cash bar, food from The Brazen Head and hopefully lots of drunken conversations with people trying to pronounced Michel Hazanavicius’ name. A mere $15 gets you in the door, but an OFF All Access Pass gets you in to this, all the films and all the rest of the parties throughout the festival, so you should probably just do that instead.
  • Obviously, I don’t need much encouragement to drink at the movies, but Film Streams (filmstreams.org) is enabling me anyway. On Saturday March 24 at 11 am, Vernie and Carter Jones, and stage director Dorothy Danner, will be discussing Opera Omaha’s upcoming production of “The Mikado” shortly before a screening of Topsy-Turvy, a movie about the creation of that comic opera. And there will be mimosas. It’s called “Mimosas and a Movie,” and $9 gets you a complimentary brunch and tickets. You have to love the mimosa, the drink that says “good-morning” with booze.
  • Gael Garcia Bernal, who is best known for being really good looking, is going to be Zorro…in space. In what sounds like a fake “Saturday Night Live” sketch, Zorro Reborn will see the iconic Spanish swordsman in a “futuristic reboot.” Although sword fighting in space has proved profitable before (right, Mr. Lucas?), this idea is on the wrong side of goofy. In other words, I am very excited to see it.
