Cutting Room for February 1

  • Despite Kanye West’s repeated assertions to the contrary, it turns out one man should have “all that power,” as illustrated in the documentary The Powerbroker. On Thursday, Feb 21 at 7 pm, Film Streams (filmstreams.org) will stop…collaborate with the Urban League of Nebraska…and listen with a Q&A about the film, which tells the story of civil rights leader Whitney Young. Producer Bonnie Boswell, who happens to be Young’s niece, will be at the screening intended to create discussion about equality and opportunity, which is interesting because opportunities to openly discuss equality are rare.
  • Because the world doesn’t have enough real-life instances of horrific sexual torture, we may yet get The Girl Who Played With Fire. The book series remains more popular than David Fincher’s American film version, but it turns out the reason that a sequel isn’t rolling yet is not because of cash concerns but because of Daniel Craig’s schedule. And one solution is to remove his character from the sequel entirely. Because who needs the guy who plays James Bond when you’ve got box-office phenomenon Rooney Mara and copious sexual violence?
  • As it turns out, Charlize Theron is both pretty and pretty funny. First displayed on her genius stint on Zach Galifianakis’s riotous Internet series “Between Two Ferns” (shown below), Theron can straight up bring the chuckle, yo. So, it’s not really surprising that she’s agree to star in A Million Ways to Die in the West, a comedy western that marks Seth McFarlane’s follow-up to Ted. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “not another comedy western!” But try to suspend your concerns long enough to give Theron’s comedy chops as much respect as her coveted gams.
