Cutting Room for February 15

  • Not only did Shakespeare invent a billion words, he is also responsible for the remake of Footloose. See, the bard’s plays have been recast, reimagined and remade for hundreds of years, and if you want proof, check out the third annual Shakespeare on the Silverscreen film series showing at the Marcus Midtown Cinema every Tuesday night from Feb 26 through March 12.  Nebraska Shakespeare (nebraskashakespeare.com) will partner with the theater to bring Shakespeare Uncovered, Twelfth Night and Titus. The latter of those films still haunts my dreams and marks the last time director Julie Taymor did something that didn’t injure others—“Spider-man: The Musical” and Across the Universe, I’m looking at you.
  • At the risk of getting “oddjobbed,” I’ll proudly state Skyfall was the best Bond film ever. So it warms the “double Os” of my heart to discover that director Sam Mendes seems likely to return to the series for the next adventure. Just a humble suggestion, but Kevin Spacey would make a great Bond villain.
  • Han Solo is back! Han Solo, as in the Han Solo, is back! Star Wars Episode VII speculation has long pondered whether or not the characters from the original trilogy would return. We now have an answer as Harrison Ford has reportedly signed on to have at least one more “bad feeling about this.” Please keep your cynicism about Ford’s career of late to a dull roar while the child inside my heart screams with absolute pleasure for a few minutes.
  • Small in stature though he may be, Peter Dinklage has just raised my hopes for X-Men: Days of Future Past. He’s going to be the “main villain,” even if we don’t know who that is yet. I don’t care really; if “The Dink” is in, so am I!
