- People looking for a chance to root against Michael Keaton since Mr. Mom now have their chance: he’s going to be the new bad guy in the Robocop remake. This casting definitely adds further juice to this potential beetle, as early script reviews have been…let’s go with “unkind.” Still, with a great group of actors, including Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley and Jay Baruchel, it’s entirely possible that they can reanimate this possible mess into something more than robocrap.
- When he’s not starring in feminist internet memes, Ryan Gosling is set to move his beloved physique behind the camera, writing and directing his debut How to Catch a Monster. It’s described as a modern day fairytale set in a vanishing city as a woman (Christina Hendricks) and her teenage son discover an underwater town. This is Gosling’s death knell as a sex symbol. Nobody finds a muscular writer who directs fairy tale movies sensitive and appealing, right?
- Although revered for his artistry, director Terrence Malick is lucky an actor hasn’t murdered him yet. He continues to film entire roles with major stars and then sort of forgets to include them in the final cut in any way. Adrien Brody went from star of The Thin Red Line to a supporting role, while Billy Bob Thornton’s narration for that film was cut entirely. In his new film, To the Wonder, Malick has just dropped not only Rachel Weisz but also Barry Pepper, Michael Sheen and Amanda Peet. At least they have company with some of Malick’s victims from previous works, like Viggo Mortensen and Gary Oldman. Hey, you work with a genius, you take chances, just ask Vincent van Gogh’s ear.
