Steven Soderbergh in Omaha, Great Gatsby, and Ben

I know it’s early notice, but Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater (filmstreams.org) will host Steven Soderbergh on February 20, 2011. That is THE Steven Soderbergh; you read that right. More details as they come. Oh, hey, new detail: I’m, like, stupid excited about this. Baz Luhrmann, who last made us cry “crikey” with the yawn-tastic Australia, is thinking about bringing us a new Great Gatsby, starring Leo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Amanda Seyfried. Sporting a staggeringly good cast if the rumors hold true, this pending adaptation is sure to launch a thousand misinformed essays on high-school tests around the country. After The Town, it seems I’m no longer the only one unabashedly loving Ben Affleck. Whereas I have sent flowers and love poems to the brilliantly butt-chinned king of current writer-director hyphenates, Hollywood is sending scripts, including Tales from the Gangster Squad, an action movie set in the 1940s. As much as I’d like to see my beloved scruffy-muffin tackle a gig outside his established range, work is work to the only guy who still remembers Reindeer Games. Covering the quest to star as the females opposite Andrew Garfield in the upcoming, wholly unneeded Spider-man reboot is exhausting. In addition to Emma Stone (love you) and Mia Wasikowska (your last name sounds like me trying to make an explosion sound with my mouth), Sony is considering Dianna Agron from “Glee” (don’t watch it, hate pop music), Georgiana Haig from Wasted on the Young (who’s-a-what-now?) and Dominique McElligott from Moon (saw the movie, don’t remember her). This many female candidates for one guy is giving me a VH1 dating show vibe. Cutting Room provides breaking local and national movie news … complete with added sarcasm. Send any relevant information to film@thereader.com. Check out Ryan on the radio on CD 105.9 (Fridays at around 7:30 a.m.), on his blog at Cuttingroomfloor.thereader.com and on Twitter (twitter.com/thereaderfilm).
