Let’s start the New Year off right with a donation to Truck Farm Omaha. Truck Farm Omaha travels around our area educating our youth about where their food comes from in a very hands-on way by showing them how to garden in the back of a truck. If you visit their website and donate, your donation can sponsor a Truck Farm visit that teaches kids about food through Truck Farm Omaha’s mobile garden. The website is www.truckfarmomaha.com for more information.

Honors have been extended to Terry Huang Ph. D and his collaborators for accepting the Design Research Award and Scholarship from the Virginia Society of the American Institutes of Architects in November for a school design that promotes healthy eating. The design incorporated edible landscapes, water access and signage into the kitchen and cafeteria areas. “The design presents a new practice-oriented tool to help prevent childhood obesity,” Dr. Huang said. “School design is known to impact student behavior, development and academic performance. The school food environment also can impact children’s eating behaviors,” he said. Dr. Huang is the chairman and professor of Health Promotion, Social and Behaviorial Health at UNMC College of Public Health. The school that inhabits the design is located in rural central Virginia.  The Reader will feature Dr. Huang and his project later in February in the Dish section.
