Bob Seger is a legend, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and, yes, he has credibility to rival almost anyone on the American stage. But until seeing Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band live — one of the best rock ensembles on the road — it’s easy to forget just how many great songs are in his catalog. And this old pro really knows how to work a crowd, leaving them wanting still after two dozen solid favorites, including a pair of two-song encores. Judging by this night anyway, Seger might fit as the king of sing-along classic rock. Rockers, ballads and a few choice covers, like Tom Waits’ “Downtown Train,” made for a memorable night, with the first half really taking off five songs in with “Old Time Rock and Roll.” Not surprisingly, “Turn the Page” with its early lyrical reference to “a long and lonesome highway, east of Omaha,” drew one of the night’s biggest responses, but song after song Seger turned to the packed house for their turn on the chorus and often the verses of most of his songs. The stellar band, 13 strong, include Silver Bullet Band members and the Motor City Horns. It also included ace sax man Alto Reed and Omaha native Shaun Murphy on backing vocals. The night ended with “Rock and Roll Never Forgets.” Those in attendance most likely never will.
