Bemis Underground Regional Exhibit deadline looming

Art on the bus…Studio 101 fundraiser…Iggy Sumnik shows at Indian Oven…Girl Scouts seeking artists’ help…

This March, Bemis Center Regional Exhibition will return to Bemis Underground. The exhibition has expanded eligibility to include artists living or working within 200 miles of Omaha. Expanding the Bemis Center’s mission to support exceptional talent, this exhibition provides the opportunity for emerging artists to present their work alongside mid-career and established artists in the cultural hub of eastern Nebraska’s contemporary arts community. Deadline for submissions: January 21.  Visit bemiscenter.org.

Last month, University of Nebraska-Omaha December 2011 art graduate Allison Claire Jeppensen took her art to the people. December 8 – 15, Jeppesen’s photographs traveled through the city inside Omaha Metro bus No. 1105. Jeppensen, a trained photographer whose work explores the contemplative power of natural imagery, called the project “Portable Prints,” bringing art into the public sphere for all to enjoy.  Jeppensen is considering doing another similar project, possibly with the UNO campus shuttles. The project was part of the Fall 2011 UNO Public Art Project led by David Helm, professor of art.

January 21, Studio [101] presents Fund [101] Silent Art Auction and Artists Reception including art by Caroline Hurley, Heather Peebles, Michael Pysh and more. Studio [101], at 1324 S. 6th St., has been hosting PROJECT 101 shows for the last 18 months. The kick-off event, 6-10p.m.,  will fund the facility and continuation of the project which will host its next show Feb. 4, Starving [artists]. http://www.studio101omaha.com

Fresh Out of the Oven: Iggy Sumnik Sculpture at the Indian Oven, 1010 Howard Street, will be on view through February including a selection of older and newer of his ceramic and mixed media work described as “archaic and fantastical, rife with balance and harmony.” Sumnik was nominated for 2012 Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards’ Best 3D Visual Artist, with a piece in the OEAA Nominee’s exhibition at Hot Shops Art Center through January 28.

ArtVenture, an annual fundraiser for Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska in March 2012, is calling for artists to become mentors for Girl Scouts, donate work for the silent auction and to serve on the Art Committee. For the artVenture program has provided Girl Scouts the chance to work closely with local artists in their studios.  Artists teach the girls about a specific medium and work with them to create a work of art, from conception to completion. Interested artists should contact Lori Williamson at lwilliamson@girlscoutsnebraska.org.
