NAC grant writing workshops…Omaha artist studying Al Gore…Apollon’s Devil show

Council Bluffs based artist Bart Vargas has two pieces featured in The Biennale of Santorini, an international cultural festival on the island off of Greece promoting emerging and established artists that work on the borders between art disciplines. With themes of “Past, Memory, History and Nostalgia,” the five multi-media established artist-jurors selected Vargas’ “ Childhood's End” and “The Call” paintings which will be on view there through September. Sept. 7, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Art will open the first annual Nebraska National Collegiate Juried Art Exhibition in the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery and celebrate the opening of the new MEDICI Gallery. Nebraska National exhibit showcases 186 undergraduate’s artwork from students across the US and Canada selected out of 495 in a variety of media. The new MEDICI Gallery will host experimental work down the hall from the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery, funded by MEDICI, a friends group that supports the Department. Unl.edu/art.

The Nebraska Arts Council is hosting Grant Writing Workshops in Kearney, Lincoln and Omaha leading up to the October 1 NAC project grant deadline. These free workshops, conducted by NAC staff members, provide specifics on writing competitive applications for NAC funding. Omaha-based environmental artist Charlene Potter is attending the Al Gore Climate Reality Training Seminar near San Francisco, CA August 21- 23. Upon her arrival in Omaha, she’ll open “Into the Future with Hopeful Eyes,” a solo exhibit of solar garden sculptures and water color work, at Hot Shops Sept. 1-29. Rosewoodenvironmentalart.com.

August 24 at the LUX Center for the Arts in Lincoln, The Apollon opens “The Devil You Do(on’t): Reconciling the Problem of Evil ” a multi-media exhibit, performance and dining experience. Visual artists John Allen, Katelyn Isom, Rachel McClain and Meghan Stratman and curator Chad M. Olsen examine the Devil’s role in both mythology and the human condition.
