Millard South principal released from hospital

Principal Curtis Case was released from the hospital Jan. 12, one week after he was shot by a student at Millard South High School. There is no timetable for Case to return to school. He released a statement on Jan. 13 saying "I still need time to heal."

Nebraska gets a D+ on public schools report card

Nebraska's public schools aren't making the grade, according to the latest annual review of the nation's public schools from Education Week. The Quality Counts 2011 report gave Nebraska an overall grade of D+, joining South Dakota and the District of Columbia as states who received the lowest grades. Teacher arrested for sexual assault

An Omaha Public Schools teacher was arrested on sexual assault charges after turning himself in on Dec. 10. Nicholas McKeone, 26, a teacher at Ashland Park-Robbins Elementary, has been on paid leave since Nov. 19 when allegations emerged that he inappropriately touched an 11-year-old student on numerous occasions since May 1. The investigation is ongoing.

UNO faculty grooming journalists in Afghanistan

The University of Nebraska at Omaha kicks off a three-year exchange program aimed at educating journalists in Afghanistan this week. The $1.3 million program, funded by a grant from the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, will send UNO faculty members to Kabul University to help build a fledgling journalism program. Starting next spring, students and professors from Kabul University will travel to Omaha.
