Cutting Room for March 8

• The idea of the guy who directed 21 Grams making a comedy scares the funny out of me. Nonetheless, Alejandro González Iñárritu is going ahead with Birdman, about a formerly famous actor who once played a superhero. And you know what? He cast Michael Keaton in the lead. Oh, that’s good. And the cast also includes Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis and Edward Norton. Given the director’s propensity for making his films like passing an emotional kidney stone, we’re about to find out how thin the line between comedy and drama really is.
• If you’re not following the ongoing saga of who is or isn’t coming back for Star Wars Episode VII, congrats on being sexually active. For the rest of us, we’ve heard Harrison Ford signed on (but not officially), Mark Hamill said he was doing it (but has no proof) and now Carrie Fisher said she’s back (but then retracted it). Combine that with George Lucas saying he was in talks with them before Disney bought Lucasfilm, and you have negotiations slightly more complicated that the ones Lucas shoehorned into the opening of The Phantom Menace.
• And speaking of Han Solo, Anchorman: The Legend Continues scored a coup by adding Harrison Ford to the cast as a “Tom Brokaw” type who serves as an old, curmudgeonly adversary. Harrison Ford? Old? Curmudgeonly? Clearly someone is forgetting his brilliant work with animated gophers in the last Indiana Jones movie.
• It’s a no-brainer that Samuel L. Jackson would be in the cast of the new Tarzan remake, but the fact that director David Yates wants Jessica Chastain to be Jane is kind of mind-blowing. Fresh off back-to-back Oscar nods, it is doubtful the gifted actress was looking for the right part where she gets to be scantily clad next to a savage dude she can’t resist while swinging from his vines.
