Tour of Germany at Zum Biergarten
German Food Galore

Many Omahans can claim some form of German ancestry, and it really shows, not just in the number of hard-to-pronounce surnames, but also with the popularity of German restaurants. In a quest to find a few German gems in Omaha, I recently visited three distinctive local eateries.

My first stop was on bustling Leavenworth Street, in a modest building with the words “Gerda’s Bäckerei,” or bakery, painted on the side. Customers are greeted by an array of confections in the pastry case. A taste of the orange roll, a type of Danish with a sugary sweet citrus glaze, and the flaky German-style apple strudel proved exceptional.

Lunch choices are limited to cold deli sandwiches and a few...

Big Nods for Two Local Chefs

Local Chefs Nominated for Prestigious Awards

On a national food stage, Omaha gets little credit for our vast culinary scene and impact on the food world. However, times they are a changing and the last two years have been an amazing journey for the Omaha food community. Last week, two local chefs were nominated for the very prestigious, 2012 James Beard Awards.

Chef and Owner Clayton Chapman of The Grey Plume, nominated for Rising Star Chef of the Year and Chef Paul Kulik of The Boiler Room, nominated as Best Chef: Midwest. From local conversations to national magazines, these two chefs are some of the best in the business. We are just fortunate enough to have them in the Metro.

Like My Grandma Makes It - Zurlo’s Bistro Italiano

Being an Italian New Yorker, I’m not only extremely loud and outspoken, but I have a tendency to be over-critical of Italian restaurants who claim to be “authentic” and say that their dishes taste like my grandmother’s Sunday dinners. So when walking into Zurlo’s Bistro Italiano, I was prepared to criticize each dish and see how it stood up against my Grandma Ida’s creations. Well, sorry Grandma, but I might have to start spending my Sunday afternoon’s at Zurlo’s now.

Located at 132th and Maple Street, Zurlo’s has been opened since February of 2010. Owner and chef Enzo Zurlo, started his culinary experience in his uncle’s kitchen making pizza as a teenager in Bronx, NY. He describes...

Sgt. Peffer’s Cafe Italiano an Omaha Staple

Over the years, pizza shops have pushed the limits of what a pizza can hold; from savory to sweet, the imagination for pizza toppings is seemingly endless. There are those of us who are traditionalists and require few items on a pizza to make us happy. A good crust, basic sauce and properly seasoned ingredients are all you need sometimes; and just because it has loads of cheese on top, does not necessarily make it a better pizza.

Sgt. Peffer’s Café Italiano in particular, has stood the test of time, and continues to convert loyal pizza enthusiasts to fans, year after year. Sgt Peffer’s has a long, rich history in the community and so I decided I wanted to know more about the early...
