When I was a kid there was a product offered by McDonald’s called the McDLT. I know I’m dating myself here by admitting that I remember this monstrosity, but if you’ve never heard of the McDLT allow me to explain why I mention this sandwich. As I did some research about green restaurants in the Omaha area, I couldn’t help but remember back to when people started to realize that the McDLT –which was served in a huge Styrofoam container that kept the meat and bottom bun separate from the condiments and upper bun- was not the smartest idea as far as the environment was concerned. During my brief stint as a McDonald’s worker in high school I remember glaring –yes, glaring- at anyone who...

Food Focus: Sunday Brunch
Brunch is about as close to a perfect meal as a meal can get. It’s particularly nice when you don’t wake up early enough for a hearty breakfast, yet still want the option of morning foods while you have lunch. Or maybe you just like having three meals before dinner. Either way, brunch is amazing.
So I wasn’t surprised that when I asked a bunch of people about their favorite brunch spots in the Omaha area, there were plenty of emphatic responses. Apparently everyone loves brunch, and everyone is convinced that they know the best place to go. My response, of course, is to just try all of these places and see which one you like the best.

I heard mixed reviews from friends who tried Baxter’s shortly after their December 2012 opening. As Benson’s newest pizza place, I had hoped not to hear such things as: “The wait is long,” “It’s expensive,“ and, perhaps the most foreboding warning, “It’s by the slice, but it’s nothing like New York style.”
Happily, I was able to debunk some of these notions.
But let’s back up a moment.
As the second offering from restaurateurs Johanna and Brad Marr along with Scott Stephens, Baxter’s has a tough reputation to live up to. Its sister restaurant, Lot 2, opened just one year earlier a few doors down the street, and was hailed as an instant classic by critics and hungry citizens of...
