Got Deer?Venison, as deer is commonly referred to once it goes from pasture to plate, adorns the tables of two kinds of people – those who hunt and those who know someone who hunts. Sure it does end up on a restaurant menu from time to time, but it doesn’t reach most of the population, which is a shame because there is plenty venison to go around.
About four years ago the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission set out to connect the hunter and the non-hunter over a mutual love of this all natural low-fat, high protein and iron rich red meat. The result is the Deer Exchange Program, a website where hunters can search to find people who want venison and those who want it can search for hunters who are...

Year two of the Great Omaha Chocolate Festival at UNO celebrates one of popular culture's great food indulgences.
Organizers of the September 30 event, which benefits the Omaha Section of the National Council of Jewish Women, say chocolate's diversity will be highlighted in displays by 44 vendors. Sample wares ranging from cupcakes to cookies to candies to frozen yogurt to dog treats. Chocolate lotions, candles and clothing items, along with cookware, will also be available.

I daresay the only thing better than an ice cream shop is an ice cream shop offering a dizzying variety of flavors. Put that ice cream shop in Dundee, and you have something great.
eCreamery is something great indeed. The inside is bright and colorful without being overwhelming. Some of the art featured behind the counter was created by a local artist. Circles and bubbles appear to be the main motif, which certainly seems appropriate for a happy ice cream shop. The Dundee location is ideal because the area is already bustling with independent eateries. “We like the environment of Dundee,” says Becky App, one of the owners. “It has such a great energy. It’s a creative place where the...

I’ll admit that the first time my friend told me there is a meadery in Bellevue I thought she was saying “meatery” and I couldn’t figure out what all the fuss was about. Once someone explained to me what a meadery actually is, I became so intrigued that I had to go check it out for myself.
Moonstruck Meadery in Bellevue opened its doors October 28, 2011. “We sold out three weeks later,” says Brian Schlueter, the meadery’s founder. “We reopened January 26 and then we closed four weeks later because we ran out of product again. We ramped up production and have been open ever since.”
It’s not a large place, but its cozy atmosphere works perfectly for the laid-back vibe of the meadery....

Come As You AreAn eye for the accessible and a true passion for letting people and food come as they are settles The French Bulldog into its Dundee home.
The highly anticipated neighborhood restaurant and deli opens this Saturday, Sept. 8th at 50th and Underwood streets. It came to fruition over many months of casual conversations and chance meetings between Amsterdam Falafel and Kabab owners Anne Cavanaugh and Phil Anania, and Chef Bryce Coulton, formerly of Pitch and the Boiler Room.
Coulton has made a name for himself amid the Omaha dining scene due to his skills and passion for charcuterie. It was during a culinary program at the Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland that he learned to truly...

Mere words cannot describe the warm affection I feel toward the breakfast meal. I consider myself quite the breakfast aficionado, so it only makes sense that I would venture out to various breakfast spots in town in search of the best place I could find where the food is delicious and the menu delightfully varied.
Vidlak’s Brookside Café, 15668 West Center Road, Mon-Sun 7:00AM – 1:00PM
Vidlak’s Brookside Café has a no-nonsense ambiance. You seat yourself and the efficient wait staff suddenly appears out of nowhere. There is not much by way of décor, but what it lacks in aesthetics it makes up for in great food and low prices.
The menu features the standard breakfast fare, but the...
