Irish Tradition on the Move

Sullivan’s bar, a long-time St. Patrick’s Day tradition, has served the midtown community since 1954, and the current owner is planning to continue that trend in a new location across the street. Owner Dan Houlihan has managed the establishment since 2001 when the chance presented itself. Houlihan had been working his way up in bars and restaurants for years before that. “I thrive on the high energy, fast-paced...

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the river bend. Usually, I would rant about the absurdity of starting a drinking binge at 7 a.m. and wearing ridiculous leprechaun hats and plastic shamrock beads, but my health and image concerns aside, St. Patty’s Day is an occasion to be festive! But there’s no need for you to look like a walking advertisement for Oriental Trading Company (okay, maybe the image concerns are...

Brigit Lives Up to O’Neill Classic

We’re warned of the fog shrouding the Tyrone family’s summer home each time the fog horn blows. The fog inside the house rolls in on wings of whiskey and morphine, sounding its warning with angry words of blame followed by regrets and apologies.

Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey into Night isn’t a bit foggy about the dysfunctional family’s complaints as the drug-addicted mother and the alcoholic father and...

‘40s Songs, Great Voices, Comedic Magic

Mix the magic and affirmative smiles from the mute narrator with well-cast voices and all you need are the familiar songs. The only problem All Night Strut: a Jumpin’ Jivin’ Jam posed for me was to keep from singing along.

The heart of this 1940s song-and-dance show came from the World War sections and the most moving moment before intermission found Erika Hall as Rosie the Riveter leading the full ensemble over...
