Witch Way North? Try Circle TheatreThere’s more than three Reasons and three McGuigans to see two openings this weekend. The Reasons all appear in the latest work of Omaha’s most prolific playwright, Doug Marr, whose Circle Theatre presents Witch Way to the North Pole.
Krista Reason plays Driselda, the main witch, and daughter Katya plays the young witch who wants to find Santa Claus. In this case, that’s “Corporate Santa” played by David...

Will Kong Climb Capital Tower? While we’re waiting for the Witching Hour this weekend and Doug Marr’s latest original play next weekend, keep your eye on the Sower, that seed-spreading statue atop the Nebraska State Capital Building at Friday noon.
I’m hoping something magical happens at the lunch hour performance of King Kong: the Puppet Show in Room 1126. Suppose Kong breaks loose from the puppeteer’s strings, grabs Amelia Barrett,...

Significant fun vs. silly fun? That doesn’t quite dichotomize the two openings, Twelfth Night, the Brigit St. Brigit’s Shakespearean play at the Joslyn Castle, and the Blue Barn’s annual holiday sendup, Who Killed Santa?
There’s also humor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where Mirror of the Invisible World, adapted from an ancient epic, has at least one point in common with the Brigit comedy. UNO’s set...

You’d think there was nothing new to say about A Christmas Carol in its 37th year at the Omaha Community Playhouse. And you’d think, after the big spread in the daily about its NET documentary airing Friday, as the Dickensian delight opens, that I’d devote this space to other theater.
After all, Mirror of the Invisible World, the Mary Zimmerman play directed by Cindy Melby Phaneuf, opens at the University of...

Tish, age 13 and 6-1, no Raggedy AnnHere’s one of my favorite bits of Omaha Community Playhouse trivia and it involves that great native Omahan who died last week at age 86, Letitia “Tish” Baldridge. If you read Mike Kelly’s column, you know about her connection to Jackie Kennedy and her fame as an author and etiquette columnist.
More than a half century ago, she was 13 and one of many young girls who auditioned for the theater’s production of...

Holiday Fare Sans ZombiesNow that we can walk around town without zombies lurching our way, beware a more benign menace: the invasion of holiday theater. It begins Friday with one of the darker seasonal traditions in a different form.
If you’re nostalgic for the Great Depression and suicidal bankers, Bellevue Little Theater offers a stage variation on Jimmy Stewart’s suffering in It’s a Wonderful Life—A Live Radio Play. Let us hope it...

Laugh as Earth Goes Boomboom offers more than the crash of a kettle drum to herald the end of the world. For me, at least, it entertained first and saved the thought-provoking part to continue days after the lights went down on the Howard Drew space at the Omaha Community Playhouse.
And it helped me overcome what I’d feared was my immunity from crude obscenities. I was so smitten with director Amy Lane’s brilliant treatment of August:...
