Wheel tax faces legal challenge

A group of concerned commuters is going to court to fight Omaha's new $50 wheel tax on employees who work in the city but live elsewhere. The tax is set to take effect Jan. 1. The Omaha Wheel Tax Coalition, led by Bellevue City Council president Carol Blood, says the new tax violates a state statute because it would be deducted from employees' paychecks. The group is also examining constitutional challenges to the tax and expects to file suit in district or federal court next week. The city maintains it has investigated the legality of the tax and is confident it would withstand a legal challenge. The tax would generate an estimated $2.8 million next year for maintenance of Omaha's streets, according to the city.
