Video Concert Review: Of Montreal at The Slowdown

One dash of David Bowie, a pinch of The Cure twisted with a peel of vaudeville - shakin', definitely not stirred. I wasn't sure what to expect from the Athens GA. electronica funk glam afrobeat musical stylings of Of Montreal after spending a day in the office youtubing them. Getting my face, ears, body and mind blasted at their show this past Friday at the Slowdown left me impressed. Armed with a basic knowledge of rock history you can easily disect their musical influences and begin to appreciate how carefully they weave them together, creating a sound wholly unique. Their choreographed live performances stand in stark contrast to the writing of their scores, coming off as much more organic. Experienced fans informed me of how their act has been evolving into a much more psychedelic show in recent years, expanding their cast to accommodate the more elaborate theatrics of the seemingly ever-inflating presentation. Be sure to watch the video above in it's entirety to fully appreciate the brevity of their psychedelicness - i.e., the light show gets pretty crazy.
