If it’s happening in Omaha it’s ‘happening’ in Benson, at the Sweatshop Gallery, 2727 N. 62nd St. A collaborative space, the Sweatshop’s co-founders include Dan Cavanaugh, Kim Reid Kuhn/Kim Darling, Jamie Hardy, Alex Jochim, Caitlin Little, and Sarah Rowe. It began in July with a kissing booth and since then continues to build steam with popular First Friday events. “These are interactive parties,” Kim Darling, artist and host, said. “People are excited about the Sweatshop. Our vision is to partner with different, independent arts organizations. They can be performance, literary, or visual, or groups of artists and musicians.” Every opening at the Sweatshop is a ‘happening,’ with events ranging from mud wrestling to alternative performances. “The Sweatshop’s mission is to support independent artists and create a vibrant network for creative people who are passionate about what they’re doing,” Darling said. “We were happy to have The Church of Tomorrow and Joey Koneko partner with us for our January First Friday.” Sweatshop’s First Friday February will be featuring CLUB NO QUIET. The event will be the record label’s kick-off showcase featuring Teal Gardner (of UUVVWWZ), Howard, Sister Kisser and more. The event will also include a punk rock karaoke and a loud mouth cattle call style art auction, featuring work by Heather Johnson, Erin Lebens, Evan Crown, Mranda Albritton, Lindsay Trapnell, Kate Humphreys, and more. 402.707.3724 www.facebook.com/sweatshopgalleryomaha
