Cutting Room for November 30

  • Although several exes have assured me it falls outside my realm of personal experience, Film StreamsRuth Sokolof Theater (filmstreams.org) and director Neil Berkeley tell me that Beauty is Embarrassing. At least, that’s the name of Berkeley’s documentary about Wayne White, a cartoonist who worked on “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse,” which will screen on December 13 at 7 pm, with a Q&A featuring Berkeley to follow. I haven’t seen the film, but if this film is possibly the artist who created such inspirational characters as “Chairry” and “Jambi,” how can you miss it? Children don’t have enough floating genie heads and anthropomorphic furniture these days.
  • Because it finished it’s too-brief run before I could get to a review, here are my quick reactions to Holy Motors, a film popping up on many a “Top 10” list this year and one that will hit video on demand and home video soon. Ever have a dream that was super clear and incredibly profound, only when you went to tell others about it everything sounded really weird and stupid. Writer/director Leos Carax found a way around that: film. Holy Motors is recklessly imaginative, gob-stoppingly acted (props Denis Lavant) and a terror to appropriately evaluate. Let’s just say it is hands down one of the best films of the year, and I have absolutely no idea if I liked it.
  • Speaking of great movies I haven’t been able to review, man did I love Safety Not Guaranteed, which was written by Derek Connolly, who is now writing a mystery script for Pixar. Considering that Safety was one of the most earnest flicks to come along in a great while, his joining up with Pixar is a union made in my personal heaven…and not just because it isn’t an exploitive sequel to one of Pixar’s other films. I’m looking at you, Finding Nemo 2.
