Cutting Room for February 1

  • Film Streams (filmstreams.org) wants us to all just get along. To help reinforce the need to quash our beefs, the theater is buddying up with the Werner Institute for Negotiation and Dispute Resolution to bring Irish filmmaker Declan Keeney to town. On March 1 at 7 pm, Keeney’s documentaries We Are Not Afraid and We Carried Your Secrets will be screened, with a post-show Q&A with Keeney. The short films cover the siege of Sarajevo and troubles in Northern Ireland, respectively, and speak to the practice of healing through remembering. I wonder if the Werner Institute helps with all disputes, like say the terrible Chicago Bears/ Minnesota Vikings divide in my family?
  • Just a quick kung fu note: Village Pointe Cinema (marcustheaters.com) will be screening the documentary I Am Bruce Lee on Feb 9 at 7 pm. Featuring rare unseen home movies and a heaping helping of interviews, the film explores one of the most significant pop culture icons of all time. If you want to enter the mind of the man who chose to Enter the Dragon, you’ll need to enter the theater for this one night only.
  • This Sunday, while you’re watching The Super Bowl, you will also get to watch one of your favorite movies be whored out in the name of capitalism. That’s right, Matthew Broderick is reprising the role of Ferris Beuller in order to sell you a Honda CR-V. The ad will supposedly recreate key scenes from the beloved classic film, in order to forever taint a source of pure nostalgic pleasure with gaudy consumerism. And here you thought you’d just be watching football.
