Cutting Room for August 23

  • Real thing: Babies love auctioneers. It’s true. Something about their gibbering cadence and mumbling is soothing to kids; my baby nephew watches cattle auctions to calm him down. This is what I was reminded of when I saw that Aksarben Cinema (aksarbencinema.com) is holding a one night only screening of the documentary Bidder 70. It’s a documentary about a University of Utah student who bid $1.8 million on land earmarked for drilling and won 22,000 acres he wanted to keep preserved. Oh, and then he was indicted on 2 felonies with sentences that could be 10 years in prison for doing it. Hit “The Ak” as I’m unsuccessfully trying to nickname the theater, on Sept 5 at 7 pm!
  • On the evening of Aug 22, 2013, Warner Bros. quietly went out and burned the Internet to the ground, leaving a barren wasteland of confused souls wailing and gnashing their teeth in near-biblical proportions. How did they destroy what Al Gore so thoughtfully created? By announcing Ben Affleck would be Batman in the upcoming Superman vs Batman. If anonymous posts are to be believed, and they almost certainly are gospel as no one has ever lied on the Internet, the movie will make zero dollars due to fan outrage and the streets are currently running red with the blood of fanboys who would rather die than see the star of Gigli behind the cowl.
  • By contrast, in news which should elate movie nerds: Star Wars Episode VII will be shot on film, not digital. This is more than just a wink and nod to purists, as JJ Abrams’ purity has long been in question; it’s a great bit of news because film simply looks better, and the footage will gel nicely with the previous entries in the series. Plus, if it is as bad as some fear, film print burns easier.
