Birchwood, OEAAs & More

Due to scheduling issues too complicated to get into here, Andrew “Jr. Boy” Jones played The 21st Saloon last Thursday. This Thursday, Sept. 12, now features the Selwyn Birchwood Band at The 21st, 5:30 p.m. They are the 2013 International Blues Challenge winners, held annually by the national Blues Foundation.
Remember for local and touring artists there are lots logistics that can go wrong, and long drives, expensive tanks of gas, bad fast-food meals, economy hotels and even couch crashing along the blues highway. When you can buy a CD or T-shirt from the band you help them get down the road. If you can’t afford to do that, say hello and let the artists know you appreciate their music.

Cowtown Jamborama
Cowtown Jamborama XI, the Omaha Jitterbugs’ annual celebration of swing dance and music, is Sept. 19-22. There are dance classes for all levels and nightly dances with live music. Particularly exciting this year is the appearance by San Francisco crooner Johnny Boyd and his current band Sunday, Sept. 22, 8 p.m., at the Eagles Ballroom, 24th & Douglas. Boyd was the frontman for Indigo Swing, one of the hottest bands in the 1990’s swing revival. Also performing will be Street Railway Band, Grand Marquis and Shotgun Jazz Band. See jamborama.com for schedule and details on pricing options that include a full weekend pass, individual classes or only the social dances.
